This week I found myself in the middle of the Derby Velodrome. It wasn’t a cycling related visit and the arena wasn’t in use by cyclists on the day, but it gave me the opportunity to see the track in the ‘flesh’ and to appreciate the size, scale and gradient of the banking. All I can say is that you need to be a Super Hero with nerves of steel to ride a bike around a velodrome, so you won’t be seeing me on a bike round there any time soon!! Having said that, now I know how easy it is to get there I would like to return as a spectator when there are cyclists on the track to give them a well-deserved round of applause.
If you are interested in track cycling then the Derby Velodrome is a fantastic new facility and well worth a visit if you live anywhere around the Midlands. It’s easily accessible from the M1. See http://www.derbyarena.co.uk/
